More than 140 people are expected to lose their jobs in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and the Ministry of Fisheries merger.

Staff were today being given details about the redundancies, with Maf set to announce the details publicly at 2.30pm.

The Government announced the merger in March, saying reducing "back-room bureaucracy" would deliver better results for a lower cost.

State Services Minister Tony Ryall said the merger was expected to net a $10 million annual saving in the first full year, with $8.5 million annual savings over time.

Public Service Association national secretary Richard Wagstaff this morning told Radio New Zealand nearly 150 people would lose their jobs.

About 241 positions were being cut, but about 97 of those jobs were already vacant, he said.
