Parliament goes into urgency to pass bills

The Government has put Parliament into urgency so it can pass 13 bills through their remaining stages before the election.

The Climate Change (Emissions Trading and Renewable Preference) Bill, which sets up the emissions trading scheme, is not on the list. It will be enacted before the election, although it is on a different track and will not be debated under urgency.

From today Parliament will sit from 9am to midnight to deal with the bills on the urgency list, read to Parliament last night by Leader of the House Michael Cullen.

Bills listed to go through their remaining stages include the Real Estate Agents Bill, the Electricity Industry Reform Amendment Bill, the Walking Access Bill, the Policing Bill, the Biofuel Bill and the Employment Relations (Breaks and Infant Feeding) Amendment Bill.

Commerce bills that will be dealt with include the Companies (Minority Buy-out Rights) Amendment Bill and the Commerce Amendment Bill.

Two bills will be given their first readings so they can be sent to select committees -- the Subordinate Legislation (Confirmation and Validation Bill (No 4) and the Cultural Property (Protection in Armed Conflict).

Parliament's current session ends on September 11. It then has a one week recess and returns on September 23 for its final session -- unless an election date has been announced that means it will be dissolved before then.
