Plan to be at your best

By Kyle Nabor - Year 11, Maniototo Area School

''Good, better, best. You should never let them rest, until your good is better and your better is the best.''

That is a quote by Tim Duncan - a retired NBA player.

Good, better, best. That quote gives the motivation to constantly seek for self-improvement.

We all have different definitions of our good, better and best.

There are always comparisons occurring between us, and we actually forget to recognise our own selves.

Did you improve? Are you at your best potential?

Everyone has the potential to accomplish their ambitions and achieve their dreams. Everyone.

You just have to try.

If you want to achieve your goals as bad as you want to breathe, you will achieve your goals.

There's always a way, but there are also excuses.

So you will come up with your excuses and cover the reality that you didn't do your best.

Instead of looking for excuses, find a way. Do not be afraid to fail.

Show me a person who doesn't make any mistakes and I'll show you a person that is not trying hard enough.

If you really want to get better, mistakes are inevitable. Fail harder and get better.

Improving yourself is like building a puzzle.

It will be slow at the start and there will be a lot of trials and errors, but once the picture starts forming, it will be easier to find out where the rest of the pieces go.

If one of the pieces doesn't fit into the picture that you are making, then next time you will know not to put it there.

You have learnt your lesson.

Once you have the big picture of what you want to achieve and you have learnt from your mistakes, it will be easier to improve.

Knowing yourself is one of the most important aspects that will help you improve.

If you haven't failed, you haven't taken the opportunity to get better.

No-one knows you better than your own self. So go out there and get better.

There are a lot of opportunities that slip out of our hands every minute.

Procrastination.

This is another reason why we don't achieve what we want to achieve.

Don't let your dreams just be dreams.

You go to school and ask: ''What time does this period end?''

Why don't you ask yourself how much work you have done and what you can do with the time you still have left?

It can be hard to break procrastination once it

becomes a habit.

However, once you do something about it, it will be a lot easier.

There are lots of ways to stop procrastination.

There is smart goal setting; setting your goal and figuring out every step in order to achieve it.

Writing down my goal and all the steps that I have to take, works the best for me.

That is just one way that happens to work for me because otherwise I would probably end up not doing anything.

Now it is up to you to take actions and find your way to success.

It doesn't matter if there are people stronger, bigger, better than you.

Don't let anything stop you.

There will be a lot of challenges along the way, but there are more reasons to chase your dreams.

Life is about balance.

Be content, but never stop improving.

So make your good better and one day you can be your best.
