New Years' honour for sporting octogenarian

In the sporting realm there's not much Christchurch man Barry Gardiner hasn't done.

The 81 year-old has played provincial tennis, rugby union and rugby league, and has won a host of world squash titles.

He's been recognised for his achievements by being made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit and is currently riding the bike most days as he trains for the Motatapu mountain bike race from Wanaka to Arrowtown in March.
