Bush survivor's dad disputes hoax claims

The father of a British backpacker who survived 12 days lost in NSW's Blue Mountains has scotched rumours the miraculous story is a hoax.

Richard Cass says he'll give any money from publicity deals to the rescue team or the hospital where his 19-year-old son Jamie Neale is recovering.

Mr Neale became lost during a day hike on July 3 but emerged from the bush on Wednesday. He was gaunt and scratched but in relatively good health.

Mr Cass, who flew out from Britain to join the search, was overjoyed to see his son after giving him up for dead.

Mr Neale is now recovering in Blue Mountains Anzac Memorial Hospital at Katoomba. He is suffering from exposure and dehydration.

The incredible story has sparked rumours the whole ordeal was a hoax to make money from the media - a claim disputed by an emotional Mr Cass.

"Look, if you want to give me a cheque it's got to go to the Blue Mountains Rescue Service or the Anzac Hospital," he told the Seven Network.

"I don't want any of this. I do not seek publicity. I don't want to be part of a celebrity culture.

"I just want my boy back and that's worth a million dollars to me."

Police have said they have no reason to question the teenager's account. They say doctors say he's suffering injuries consistent with being lost in the bush for an extended period.
