Police say at least six people are dead and 30 injured after a freight train derailed and two cars filled with gas exploded just outside a station in an Italian town.

A police official says the explosion engulfed several homes in the Tuscan town of Viareggio, collapsing one building and setting fire to a vast area.

Five people were killed when their house collapsed, while a sixth victim was driving on a scooter along the rail line when the train derailed. At least 30 people were injured in the accident which occurred shortly before midnight on Monday in the seaside resort.
