For the first time in M&M's 75-year-long history of "melt-in-your-mouth, not-in-your-hand" candies, a new flavour is set to become a permanent member of the M&M family.

According to money.cnn.com, from May next year, caramel fans will be able to get there hands on a new range of the bite-sized candies, which will feature a soft caramel center covered in milk chocolate and, of course, the brand's signature colourful shell.

While you may have tried the likes of M&M's coconut or chili flavours, the new permanent addition introduces a fourth "soft and chewy" category to the range of "crispy" (pretzel), "smooth" (milk and chocolate) and "nutty" (peanut) M&M's.

It's yet to be confirmed as to whether the caramel range will be available on New Zealand shelves next year too.

M&M's wartime origins
M&M's were initially developed during World War II. The chocolate candies made for a handy snack for soldiers in the field thanks to their ability to "melt in the mouth, not in the hand."
