Hundreds of thousands of revellers have turned out for London's Notting Hill Carnival, turning the UK capital into a riot of colour in what is billed as Europe's biggest street party.

Some estimates put crowd numbers at one million who flocked to soak up the Caribbean spirit.

Flamboyant costumes were to the fore as dancers in feathers and bikinis paraded through the west London streets, while a stream of elaborate floats filed past.

Police said the event was largely peaceful, and about 150 people had been arrested, largely for drugs, public order and drunken behaviour offences.

Lewis Benn, director of Notting Hill Carnival, said it had been a big success.
