A man died after crashing a plane into his own home in the US state of Utah, just hours after he was arrested for domestic violence.
The fatal crash in Payson took place just before 3am on Monday (local time), and after 47-year-old Duane Youd had been cuffed following an incident at 7:30pm the night before.
Youd was killed and the plane was destroyed, but despite the presence of a "significant fireball," Youd's wife and child were unharmed.
"There were two individuals in the home at the time that the plane went in," Sgt. Noemi Sandoval of the Payson City Police Department told Fox 13.
"They were able to get out of the home without any injuries. Obviously they were very shook up over what had happened but they weren't physically injured."
After he was released on bail the night before, Youd went back to the home to pick up some belongings, with police present. He then headed to Spanish Fork Airport. The "experienced pilot" did not own the plane but had access to it, according to the Deseret News.
The plane would clip a shed before striking the house, which may have altered his intended path. The front of the home became engulfed in flames.
"We can only speculate what the motive is behind it," Sgt. Sandoval told the Deseret News.
Youd had a history of domestic violence arrests, according to the newspaper. He apparently had been fighting with his wife on Sunday night.
"They had been drinking. He assaulted her and witnesses saw this happening," Sandoval told the Deseret News.
