Teenager's leg severed in train accident

Police are investigating how a young man fell under a train and severed his leg in Melbourne last night.

The 17-year-old was travelling with a friend on the Eltham line at 11.45pm NZT yesterday.

A police spokesman said that when the train reached the Eltham platform, one of the young men made it safely to the platform while the other ended up underneath the train, which ran over his leg, severing it at the knee.

The teenagers had been travelling between two carriages, where the carriages connect.

It is unknown how the victim ended up on the tracks.

Paramedics worked on the teenager at the scene in a bid to save his leg, before taking him to hospital.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said that despite the shocking injuries, the teenager was very lucky not to have been more seriously hurt.

"His leg has been pretty badly severed but it's surprising that he hasn't got life-threatening injuries, given the circumstances," spokesman Ray Rowe said.
