Wife who set fire to husband's penis bailed

A "jealous wife" charged with her husband's murder after allegedly setting fire to his genitals, must submit to psychiatric assessment, counselling and treatment.

Rajini Narayan, 44, was released on bail today on Friday after an appearance in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to face allegations she set her husband on fire while he slept after learning he was having an affair.

She will remain confined to her home and will have to wear an electronic bracelet to monitor her movements.

Magistrate William Ackland also ordered the mother-of-three to accept any psychiatric assessment, monitoring, counselling and treatment considered appropriate.

Prosecutor Lucy Boord had opposed bail because of the seriousness of Narayan's alleged offence, particularly its premeditation.

She said the Crown also had concerns as to whether the woman fully understood how her actions had landed her in her current situation.

Prosecutors on Monday told the court that Narayan confessed to neighbours that she had set her husband, 47-year-old Satish Narayan, alight while he was sleeping after learning he was having an affair.

Mr Narayan suffered major burns in the December 7 blaze and was admitted to hospital, but died last week.

Ms Boord said Narayan told her neighbours she was a "jealous wife" and that her husband's "penis should belong to her".

Narayan allegedly said: "I just wanted to burn his penis so it belongs to me and no-one else ... I didn't mean this to happen".

The fire gutted the family's suburban Unley home leaving a damage bill of $A1 ($NZ1.2) million.

As part of her bail conditions Narayan was not prevented from seeing her children but was ordered to surrender her passport, even though the court noted it was probably lost in the fire.

Magistrate Ackland also ordered Narayan provide a personal undertaking to pay $A5000 and two guarantors to provide $A5000 each if she failed to attend court.

He set down February 20 for her next appearance.
