A gathering of over 100 art enthusiasts attended the opening of the Art in February exhibition on Friday, February 10.

It is on at the Dunedin Community Gallery, 20 Princes St, until February 22.

The award-winning writer and illustrator David Elliot officially opened the 6th annual exhibition of this group of 17 local artists.

Many of the artists whose work is displayed started their art-making together at the Fine and Visual Arts course at King’s High where they were tutored by Elliot.

Elliot recalled that time as “a fantastic time”. He spoke of the art community and the feeling of support that is gained from the people you learn with and paint with – “it is a very important community”.

“Those who create art also create memories.”

The works in the exhibition use a range of media, including acrylic, pastels, mixed media, woodblock and etching. The different styles reflect each artist’s approach. The subjects range from local landscapes to still life and portraiture. There is something to appeal to all tastes.
