The King's moment

At the London premiere of Handel's Messiah, King George was so moved by the “Hallelujah Chorus” that he spontaneously rose from his seat.

The entire audience could not sit in the presence of a standing King, and since 1743 audiences have continued to do the same.

The photo was taken during the performance in the Dunedin Town Hall on December 7.
