So I said "I wanted to have a conversation about using medical marijuana to manage several of my conditions but particularly the inflammatory and nerve pain", GP response " Oh NO we cant do that it is not funded in anyway and would cost thousands and thousands of dollars".
Dream shattered, hope disappeared over the horizon laughing hysterically at my naivety.
It has been a difficult year for some, it has been a difficult decade for some and for others a difficult life. I speak of the many people who live with chronic pain and illness. I am one of those who has gone in life from resisting taking any medication to now relying on a cocktail of pills to get me through very difficult days and nights.
Then having to deal with the side effects of the medications, and the contraindications of the same medications. Sounds confusing? it is a lot to get your head around.
What you take to survive means you cannot take any anti inflammatory to deal with the pain from widespread arthritis and past injuries. There is a limit to what paracetamol can do for this depth of pain, but if you go the next step to opioids the side effects are that you become sleepy, woolly headed, and pretty much useless, danger of becoming addicted or worse badly constipated. Pain Management skills courses turned out to be trying to teach what had already been learned through experience and common sense.
Having lived a long time with all these of problems I was very excited to hear that medical marijuana was now available from a GP, from April 1, this year. The Lock down and other problems finally passed and I was able to finally get a face to face appointment with my GP to ask for a prescription, to plan how to wean off some current items and introduce the appropriate version of the natural option.
But Yeah Nah not for people like me not for the people who have worked hard but for low wages, and definitely not for people on Supported Living Benefits. Shafted by the "Peoples Party" Government. All those smooth advertisements about the referendum saying we want to do it New Zealand's way apparently just means lots of control and people missing out.
So please vote for total legalisation so people like me can at least occasionally have a day of relief.
