The Waitati Militia cannon is fired to mark the opening of the track.
Waitati Militia drummers lead people down the new boardwalk further into the estuary area, where there was a marquee and afternoon tea.
The Orokonui Lagoon Walk, which takes about an hour to complete, is a loop track around a 56-hectare estuary in Waitati.
The environment encompasses saltmarsh, a flax swamp, grasslands and regenerating lowland forest.
It is home to an ongoing native vegetation restoration project. The walk was opened on Saturday, November 4.
