On Sunday the inaugural Waikouaiti Beach Run/Walk event was held at the Waikouaiti Sports Park.

The principal of Waikouaiti School, John Prescott, was very happy with the day and said “it was some great work and organisation from the Waikouaiti Friends Of the School (FOTS) community as a fundraiser for Waikouaiti School”.

There were over 120 entries with contestants from the local area plus international visitors, including a group of ladies from Ranfurly completing the full beach course for the first time.

Starting from the Waikouaiti Sports Park, contestants for the 10km course ran, or walked, the full length of the beach from Matanaka to the edge of the Karitane estuary, before returning to Waikouaiti Park. There was also a 5km and a 2km event, the later of which had over 50 school kids eagerly racing at high speed down the beach! The FOTS team also provided a BBQ and refreshments.

Organisers wish to thank Total Traffic Management, Farmlands Real Estate, Dunedin City Council, Sport Otago, OceanaGold Corporation (Macraes Operation), Nidd Real Estate and New World Gardens for their support. Also a big thank you to Liz Walker who was our onsite medic.
