Where was the gloomiest main centre in 2020

In the south we are used to being the brunt of weather statistics in Dunedin.

When you are further south, the climate will naturally be more bracing... but it's not that dissimilar to other main centers. Headlines today said that Dunedin was the coolest and dullest - well not quite.

I've been tracking this year (as you do) looking at the NIWAS monthly reports: Wellington got the least sunny title at 2016 hours compared to Dunedin's 2102, with Tauranga coming top at 2493 hours. Wellington also got the prize for being the wettest last year, 1255 mm compared to Dunedin's 599 mm, with Christchurch the driest at 488 mm.

So... although we may moan at times (especially after the start to 2021) about our fickle climate, we haven't shaped up too badly last year where it counts: catching the rays and avoiding the rain.
