Erosion protection work started yesterday on the south bank of the Kakanui River.

The project is  designed to help protect the Kakanui river mouth.

The Waitaki District Council and Kakanui Residents and Improvement Society scheme has a total budget of $36,000.

The society’s president, Lucianne White said she was happy the project was under way.

"It’s been quite timely. The discussion around the erosion pre-dates me."

Work would include a focus on protection around the esplanade area, planting, and future-proof erosion work.

She said the erosion of the south bank had begun to cut close to the playground  on the top of the bank and so the discussion with the community and council was centred more on if there was time  to wait to do work or if  it was a pertinent move.

"It’s a continuation of the rock wall that exists already. Above that will be added bonuses. Once the project is completed, there will be a better and safer access-way down to the river."

The biodiversity of the planting was yet to be finalised, but Mrs White expected the society would call on the council’s biodiversity staff to advise if the selection would consist of  plants native to the area or if the call would be made to use erosion-proofing plants.
