Peace and physical health will be promoted at a special gathering for wellness.

The power of yoga will be marked during the 12th International Day of Yoga celebration on Sunday, June 21 at Dunedin North Intermediate School.

Dunedin Indian Association president Dr Rohit Jain said the core theme for the event was yoga for wellness, wisdom and world peace.

The gathering will feature a group of yoga instructors and district schools coming together under one roof.

Presenters from across the region, including representatives from Iyengar Yoga Dunedin alongside various independent practitioners, will guide the public through live showcases and interactive sessions focusing on a holistic approach to health.

The curated afternoon will introduce participants to a broad spectrum of the ancient practice, covering asana (physical postures), pranayama (breath control) and dhyana (meditation).

Attendees young and old will have the opportunity to explore a variety of styles, from foundational movements such as Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutations) to advanced traditional alignments such as shirshasana (headstands).

“Yoga is a universal path to physical health and mental clarity and our goal is to bring together a rich mix of local teaching talent to make it accessible to every individual in our community.

“Having multiple perspectives and schools represented ensures that our attendees can discover the specific wellness practices that resonate best with their daily lives,” Dr Jain said.

The free event is open to all members of the public, from absolute beginners to advanced practitioners.

Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mats and wear comfortable clothing to take part.

The shared sessions organised by the Dunedin Indian Association are supported by the High Commission of India in New Zealand, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Dunedin.
