Call for University to become closer to community

At Monday's meeting of the University Council, the Rev.W.Hewitson, in accordance with notice of motion, moved as follows: With a view to relating the primary and secondary department of our educational system, and also the general community, more closely with the University, it is desirable that the constitution of the council should be amended so as to include not only representatives of the Government, the Professorial Board, and the graduates, but also representatives of (1) the Education Boards of Otago and Southland; (2) the primary school teachers of Otago and Southland; (3) the High School Boards of Otago and Southland; (4) the secondary school teachers of Otago and Southland; and (5) the City Council of Dunedin.

Further it is desirable that the term of office for all representatives should be three years.

The Rev.Mr Hewitson said that he would allow the last portion of the motion, which referred to the tenure of representation, to stand over for the present.

His object in bringing forward this motion was that he desired to have the University related more closely to the community.

The present system of representation on the University Council was not what it should be.

In the first place they should have proper provincial representation; secondly, they should have representation by the administrative department of their educational system; and, thirdly, representation by the teaching department.

As to provincial representation, the only member of the council who resided outside of Dunedin was Mr Stewart.

Then there was no representation from the High Schools Board of Governors. Then, they had no member of the teaching profession on the council. That condition of affairs was, to him, not desirable, for various reasons.

• Nurse McKinnon, who is well known in connection with the society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children, is to leave for Napier next week in order to meet Lady Plunket and establish a new branch of the society there, the Napier people having guaranteed to provide for a Lady Plunket nurse.

It is expected that Nurse McKinnon will be absent from Dunedin for about two months, while the new Napier nurse is in training.

The assistant nurse will take up Nurse McKinnon's duties in the meantime. - ODT, 4.6.1908.
