As a result of the outbreak of diphtheria at Stony Creek, seven cases altogether have been transferred to the Dunedin Hospital.

Four of these are suffering from diphtheria, and the other three are "carriers".

Three residences at Hillend have been isolated and disinfected, and one sufferer from the malady at Hillend has been isolated.

The district health inspector informed our correspondent that the throats of all the children attending the Stony Creek and Matea Schools had been swabbed, and that at present every child who attended those schools must be regarded as a potential case.

It was difficult, he said, to find the real cause of the outbreak, but there was now no fear of it spreading.

The Stony Creek and Matea Schools had been closed, and would not be reopened for at least another fortnight, but in the meantime each would be thoroughly disinfected.

• The commissioners of the Land Purchase Board have acquired for subdivision 6000 acres of Mr William Telford’s famous Clifton estate.

It is expected that the blocks will be surveyed and ready for balloting about February or March, and as the estate is one that has enjoyed a most favourable reputation during the long period it has been in the possession of the Telford family a successful settlement is predicted.

The land is virtually virgin soil, as, although it has been ploughed and grassed, it has never been cropped for grain.

Stock and wool grown on Clifton have always been amongst the best, and as a very large proportion of the flock has consisted of stud Romneys some idea of the cleanliness and growth of pasture can be imagined.

The sale was negotiated by Messrs Dalgety and Co., Dunedin.

Sydney: If the question is asked whether we have a cattle king in Australia, we can answer "Yes", and name Mr Sid. Kidman.

It will help to form an idea of the extent of his realm when it is stated that the area of country held by him (mostly on leasehold from the State Governments) aggregates at least 50,000 square miles.

The total area of New Zealand is given as 103,581 square miles.

These figures may make Mr Kidman look like a monopolist, but his biggest leases are in places where nobody else went, and it is very likely that but for him huge areas that are stocked would otherwise not have been utilised.

His huge "out-back" ventures in a country subject to droughts like Australia is, entail correspondingly big risks.

Mr Kidman mentioned a few days agothat last year’s drought meant to him the loss of 28,000 head of cattle on one run alone.

• A Christchurch Press representative who was interviewing a member of the tailoring trade, was shown an invoice from a woollen firm in London, on the back of which was typed a lengthy declaration regarding the production and destination of the goods.

One clause provided that the shipper is to declare that every article mentioned in the invoice had been either wholly or partially produced or manufactured in the United Kingdom, and is bona fide the produce or manufacture of that part of the British dominions.

In regard to articles not wholly produced in the United Kingdom the invoice has to declare the final process of manufacture or production has been performed in the British dominions, and also to give exact details of the cost of such article, and this cost is to be ascertained without including profits of any manufacturer, trade broker, or agent, and outside of all shipping and insurance rates.

Great pains are taken to declare the destination, and  much care is taken to prevent the goods  reaching the enemy. — ODT, 15.8.1916.
