• "I don't think much of a girl who does not pay some attention to her dress," said Mrs Neligan, wife of Bishop Neligan, at a recent gathering at Auckland.

"A girl should take a reasonable pride in her dress. A girl should be well dressed, according to her looks and her circumstances. She should be womanly, and select colours which are suitable. Girls should get fewer dresses and let the dresses they wear be of good material. They should avoid wild, weird fashions.

"Why should you wear a colour that does not suit you simply because it is the fashion? It is a great pity girls cannot be more independent-minded. And, after all, dress is of minor importance compared with many other great big things. Never let dress become your taskmaster."

• A grateful old-age pensioner has written to the Deputy-commissioner of Old-age Pensions of New South Wales, showing that he cannot only live on 10s a week, but save very considerably on that sum.

As the Daily Telegraph says, the surprising thing is that such a thrifty old gentleman should be in need of the pension at all.

He has forwarded several of his weekly accounts.

The lowest was as follows: - 20th: Rent 2s, milk 1d. 21st: Milk 1d, bread 3½d. 22nd: Morning paper 1d, and milk 1d. 23rd: Tram fares 2d, and morning paper 1d. 24th: Milk 1d, bread 3d, morning paper 1d, and sugar 2½d. 25th: Milk 1d, and morning paper 1d. Total, 3s 8½d.

The old gentleman explains that the sale, modest as it is, includes some luxuries that he could do without if necessary, though it is difficult to see where they are, except, perhaps, it be the morning paper.

Sometimes, however, the heart of the pensioner expands, and he indulges in a week of riotous living.

For such a week the scale was as follows: - 10th: Rent 2s, matches 2d, raisins 3d, sardines 5d, peppermints 3d, meat pie 1d. 11th: Bread 2½d, milk 1d, methylated spirits 6d. 12th: Milk 1d, bread 1½d, sausage meat 1½d, beer and lunch 6d. 13th: Beer and lunch 3d, milk 1d. 14th: Milk 1d, beer and lunch 3d. 15th: Milk 2d. 16th: Butter 6½d, bread 3d, arrowroot 2½d, tomatoes 3d. Total, 6s 10½d.
