It took a five-way playoff to decide this year's winner of the ODT Extra! Canterbury year 7 and 8 spelling quiz, held at Chisnallwood Intermediate School.
Christchurch South Intermediate's team 4 emerged the winner, scoring 96 points.
The year 5 and 6 quiz was equally exciting, Avonhead School winning the title for the first time with an outstanding score of 99 points.
A total of 124 teams and 372 teams entered the quiz, which was held on Wednesday.
The Central Otago spelling quiz takes place at Cromwell College next Wednesday and Thursday.
