Spelling quizzes popular in Christchurch

More than 400 pupils, watched by about 300 parents and friends, took part in the ODT Extra! Canterbury Spelling Quiz in Christchurch this week, as the quiz grows in popularity in the region.

Quiz co-ordinator Ivan Behrnes said the support shown by parents was great and the standard was very high.

The quiz for years 5 and 6 and years 7 and 8 was held on Wednesday night, at Chisnallwood Intermediate School, and the quiz for years 9 and 10 was held at St Andrews College on Thursday night.

The Dunedin round of quizzes is to be held next week.

Years 5 and 6 and years 7 and 8 will be held at Tahuna Normal Intermediate School on Wednesday, and years 9 and 10 at Otago Girls High School on Thursday.

Christchurch results. - Years 5 and 6: Merrin School 1, won in playoff, from Cathedral Grammar School 2, Riccarton Primary School, Belfast Primary School Cashmere Primary School (equal) 3; Years 7 and 8: St Andrews College 1, Cobham Intermediate 2, Heaton Intermediate and St Pauls School (equal) 3; Years 9 and 10: St Andrews College 1, Rangi Ruru Girls School 2, Burnside High School 3.
