Houses in Alexandra were left without electricity today after a power pole fell in Chicago St.

The pole fell about halfway down towards the road.

The pole does not appear to have damaged surrounding houses.

Chicago Street is open but the footpath around the pole remains closed.

The fire service and police were notified at 1:50pm.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand communications shift manager Tim Reynolds said two fire trucks attended.

He said firefighters stood by and secured the scene while they waited for Delta power line crews to arrive.

An Aurora Energy spokesman said Delta worked to secure the pole using concrete and cranes.

The spokesman said Delta would carry out permanent repairs in due course.

The spokesman was unable to comment on the reason for the collapse or the exact area where the power went off.

Neighbouring resident Bridie Tutty was shocked when it happened.

"I was sitting down in the lounge and it just fell down."

Miss Tutty said the power did not go off immediately, but Delta turned the power off for about 3-4 hours when they arrived.

I think the reason for the fall is pretty obvious, gravity assisted incompetence and neglect. A pole, carrying high voltage conductors falls over to 45 degrees on a sunny day in Alexandra, I hope the mayor who will " come down hard on safety issues" is awake this afternoon.

Can't say they weren't warned about this Richard. The arrogance of knowing better than those on the "shop floor", keep the pressure on mate someone needs to be accountable for this.
