Fire crews have managed to contain a large scrub fire burning close to the main highway near the Clyde cemetery in Central Otago.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said seven appliances were sent to the blaze, which the service was alerted to at 4.59pm today.

Smoke could be seen from Alexandra.

Police said the fire was right next to the intersection of State Highway 8 (Alexandra to Cromwell) and Springvale Rd.

Smoke had affected motorists at times and police were on hand to control traffic.

Police said about 7.40pm that officers had left the scene and SH8 and Springvale Rd were operating as normal.
