An enthusiastic bunch of youngsters had the first opportunity to dazzle on the ice as the five-day Ice Camp began at Naseby's Maniototo Ice Rink yesterday.

After last week's Luge Camp, this week's event will offer further wintry school holiday fun for more than 50 pupils aged between 7 and 15 as the event, which runs between 10am and 3pm each day, serves both as an "introductory to ice sports" and a talent-identification event.

The camp will culminate in an "exhibition day" on Friday which will include a luge race, a hockey game and figure skating exhibition.

New Zealand Luge president Geoff Balme said: "It was neat to see some kids who had never skated or luged before" build confidence across the day.

By the end of the day they're skating around the ice unsupported."
