The Hupmobile was restored in the 1960s by Mrs Garrick’s grandfather, Merven Coutts, before being passed on to her parents.
The car has now been given to Mr and Mrs Garrick, who took their first trip in it this week from their Cromwell home to visit friends in Alexandra, have a snack at Olivers in Clyde and return through the Cromwell gorge with the temperature hovering around 30degC.
Angling the side mirror to catch a breeze provided air conditioning as the car hit a top speed of 43 miles per hour, but did little to cool feet catching the heat from the engine.
