Central wines win 13 golds in Air NZ awards

Thirteen Central Otago wines are in the running for the ''best of the best'' elite golds and trophies at the Air New Zealand Wine Awards.

After more than 1400 wines were judged over three days this month, Central Otago wines have won 13 of 91 gold medals awarded.

The premier awards will be announced on November 12 in Auckland.

Chairman of judges Michael Brajkovich said the most pleasing aspect of this year's awards was the spread of gold medals across varieties and regions.

''Pinot noir was once again the star performer with 17 golds. Predominantly, the wines came from Marlborough and Central Otago, but a Hawke's Bay Pinot noir was also in the mix.''

Otago wines were most dominant in the pinot noir section, winning six golds, followed by the rose section, where they secured two of the three golds awarded and the exhibition red wine section, where two roses also got golds.

As for white wine, two received golds in the exhibition white or sparkling section and Peregrine's sauvignon blanc won gold in both the champion savignon blanc section and the open white section.

In addition to the gold medals, 268 silver medals and 614 bronze medals were awarded by the judges.
