There  is a change at the helm of the Central Otago District Council but it appears the status quo will remain when it comes to the deputy mayor.

Mayor elect Tim Cadogan has announced he will recommend Neil Gillespie continue in the role of deputy mayor. Cr Gillespie has been deputy since Tony Lepper was elected mayor in 2010.

``Neil plainly comes with all the qualities, qualifications and experience any mayor would want in a deputy. He is a man I can relate to and I am sure we will work well together, '' Mr Cadogan said.

The council and mayor will be sworn in at the first council meeting for the new term on Wednesday, October 26. The heads and deputy heads of committees will also be appointed then.

Mr Cadogan said he discussed who should be deputy mayor when he met councillors individually last week and they unanimously backed his choice.

Mr Cadogan beat Mr Lepper for the mayoralty by 2685 votes.
