Education sessions will be next year added to Central Otago's woolliest fashion showcase.

Organisers this week announced the ''first look'' night for the WoolOn Creative Fashion awards will be held in Alexandra on Friday, May 26 and its Gala Evening will be held the next night.

The event began 13 years ago and for most of its life has been held in September or October, as the last event in the Alexandra Blossom Festival.

Organisers announced in February the event would stand alone as the event was growing and they wanted to spread the financial strain of attending events throughout the year.

Event chairman Tim Cadogan said next year it would include ''intimate education-based sessions'' so people could learn or develop skills in the use of wool in design.

''With such a homogenised world, we recognise a strong desire among people of all generations to get back the skills and knowledge to be able to design and/or make their own garments.''

This addition helped the committee gain charitable status, he said.
