Paper blossoms are blooming in Alexandra.

The Alexandra Four Square has undergone a spring makeover — in the form of nearly 20,000 paper blossoms covering the supermarket's Tarbert St storefront.

Shop assistant Millie Harrex initiated the idea to celebrate the Alexandra Blossom Festival after its 65-year celebrations were cancelled because of Covid-19 alert level changes.

Four Square owners Monique and Shannon Entwisle jumped at the opportunity, creating many nights of staff bonding opportunities to make the blossoms together.

Miss Harrex said staff had spent ‘‘hundreds of hours’’ planning and creating the blossom display, with parents, grandparents, in-laws and siblings called in regularly to help pull it together.

Mrs Entwisle said she had really loved seeing people’s reaction.

‘‘Everyone is disappointed [the festival was cancelled] so it’s a wee something to make them smile — under their mask.

Seeing the display was an emotional moment for Blossom Festival event manager Martin McPherson.

‘‘It brought tears to my eyes when I saw it,’’ he said.
