Guilty plea over Cromwell quad bike death

A 23-year-old Cromwell engineer has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol following the death of a man after a fall from a quad bike in September.

Andrew Paul Grubb (20), of Cromwell, died in hospital from his injuries five days after he came off the bike in Wishart Cres in Cromwell early on Sunday, September 11.

Cody Ethan Mitchell pleaded guilty when he appeared in the Alexandra District Court today and was remanded on bail for sentencing on February 15.

Counsel Justine Baird told the court there had been talks already between Mitchell and Mr Grubb's parents, and an apology, but asked for a delay so restorative justice was not "rushed".

Judge Dominic Flatley remanded Mitchell for a pre-sentence report, report on a possible electronic sentence and a drug and alcohol assessment and imposed a bail condition of no driving.

Mr Grubb was a member of the Otago Country rugby team and was also in the North Otago cricket team.

The parents of both men were in court today.
