High winds fell 33,000V power pole

A power pole carrying a 33,000V line fell near Roxburgh last week, Aurora Energy has confirmed.

The wooden pole fell on a rural property in Gorge Creek during ‘‘severe winds across most of Central Otago’’ on Friday, a spokesman for the power company said.

A ‘‘protection’’ mechanism operated ‘‘as expected’’, disconnecting the power at the time of the fault, the spokesman said.

However, as the supply from Alexandra to Roxburgh and Ettrick came from two separate 33,000V power lines, while the pole was replaced, power remained on to all customers through the other line.

All pole failures were taken seriously and an investigation into the cause was under way, the spokesman said.
