An investigator has been called after a holiday home near Ranfurly was destroyed in a blaze overnight.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews attended about 4.30am after receiving a call from someone who could see fire on the hill from a distance.

When crews got to the scene, in White Sow Valley Rd, they found it was a house fully involved in fire, he said.

The house was "pretty well knackered" so crews worked to protect neighbouring structures and prevent it from spreading, he said.

No-one was residing in the house at the time of the blaze as it was a holiday home.

The cause of the fire was not yet known and a fire investigator was expected to attend at some stage.

The house was not hooked up to electricity, the spokesman said.

The fire was out and the crew from Ranfurly was getting set to leave the scene.
