House badly damaged

A house in Ranfurly was extensively damaged in a fire believed to be sparked by a diesel burner yesterday.

Ranfurly volunteer firefighters found the house to be "well ablaze" after a call from one of the occupants of the home at 7.07am.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said while a fire investigator needed to definitively determine the cause, firefighters who attended the blaze in a two-storey house in Tyrone St were confident the diesel burner started it.

All occupants made it out safely and the fire was brought under control by 8.50am, he said.
