Gardeners will be able to brighten up their properties with free flowers available to the public in Alexandra today.

As restoration work begins on the Alexandra War Memorial on the corner of Tarbert St and Centennial Ave this morning, plants and topsoil will be removed.

From 10am, the flowers, Iceland poppies, will be available for people to take from an Asplundh ute in Pioneer Park.

Restoration on the memorial is being carried out before the centenary of the World War 1 Gallipoli campaign in April next year.

The Central Otago District Council apologised for any inconvenience, and thanked the community for its patience.

Unveiled on Armistice Day in 1921 by then mayor William Black, the Alexandra War Memorial was rededicated on Anzac day, 1947, in memory of those from the wider Alexandra area who died in World War 2.

Sixty-two names are listed on the memorial.
