Rural Otago area commander Inspector Mike Cook, based in Alexandra, has been seconded to the district's policing excellence project, likely for up to 18 months.
Southern district commander Superintendent Bob Burns said Insp Cook began work at the start of June and "brings a strong skill set that will make a valuable contribution to the task of implementing new work processes and systems across the district".
The project is a series of initiatives aimed at making police more effective and focused on crime prevention.
"The aim is to free up police from time-consuming processes and paperwork so they can concentrate on working more with the public, focus on victims and prevent problems escalating. The end goal is to understand victims' needs better, placing more emphasis on preventing crime and crashes and improving police's ability to respond to changing demands," Supt Burns said.
