Letter to the Editor

Yet another disappointment to read of our mayor’s disregard for democracy using their own opinion to bludgeon others regarding the spelling of Maniototo.

When we hear it has no meaning in Māori, or whether it "likely" means something according to him, it’s not up to him (the only vote against keeping the spelling the same).

The Maniototo Community Board, Kati Huirapa Runaka ki Puketeraki representatives and the council decided it meant something to the generations that grew up there, and that should be honoured.

The mayor should stand for democracy not themselves.
