Four murals designed and painted by school pupils from four schools were unveiled in Alexandra on Tuesday.

Artist Maxine Williams was one of the organisers of the Alexandra Youth Mural Project, which was a joint initiative between the Central District Arts Trust, the Central Otago District Council and local funding bodies.

It is part of the youth project charter, which was developed by the trust to implement some of the recommendations identified in the 2013 arts strategy, which was designed to encourage education, participation and development in the arts for young people in Central Otago.

Ms Williams said she held several weekly workshops for pupils from St Gerard's, Alexandra Primary School, Clyde Primary School and The Terrace School, who learned about street art history, and also developed and designed the murals.

The murals were then painted by the pupils and members of the public during the Alexandra Thyme Festival last month.

Each mural has Central Otago themes or icons, including the Alexandra clock, the four seasons, the Otago Central Rail Trail and aliens kidnapping a cow against a backdrop of Central Otago landscapes.

''I am really proud of the kids,'' Ms Williams said.

''I think they have done a beautiful job.

''It was a big day for them to be there for hours painting them [at the festival], but they were tenacious and enthusiastic in the way they approached it.''

The murals will be installed at the Alexandra BMX, Molyneux Park, Clyde Railway Station and Golden Block public toilets.
