New citizens welcomed with national anthem

Central Otago’s latest citizenship ceremony was celebrated in true Kiwi style in Alexandra yesterday.

People from a range of nationalities were welcomed with a powhiri before swearing allegiance to Her Majesty The Queen in front of friends, family and Mayor Tim Cadogan (centre).

Among them are (from left) Gary Coughtrey (Britain); Garry Croy (Britain); Hans-Joachim Scholz and Renate Scholz (Germany); Jason John (Britain); Petra Malkova (Czechoslovakia); Susan Soennichsen (America); Craig Gilchrist (Britain); Janet Hawkins (Australia); Weiwei Su (China) and Zoe Cunningham (Britain).

Clyde School children performed the national anthem to complete the ceremony.

Our journalists are your neighbours

We are the South's eyes and ears in crucial council meetings, at court hearings, on the sidelines of sporting events and on the frontline of breaking news.

As our region faces uncharted waters in the wake of a global pandemic, Otago Daily Times continues to bring you local stories that matter.

We employ local journalists and photographers to tell your stories, as other outlets cut local coverage in favour of stories told out of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

You can help us continue to bring you local news you can trust by becoming a supporter.
