Otago Lakes Central Police are trying to identify an owner for this vehicle, which was recovered earlier this month when people using it were arrested in relation to a burglary in Palmerston, Otago.

An examination of the vehicle found  the engine number had been partly destroyed, while the Vehicle identification Number (VIN) appears to have been cut out and replaced with a legitimate vehicle identity plate.

Detective Alan Lee, of the Wanaka Police, says an assessment of all reported unlawful takings of Toyota Hiluxes in the South Island since January 2015 has been unsuccessful in identifying this vehicle, and police are seeking the help of the public to find its owner.

An expert has identified the body as a Toyota Hilux from between 1996–2003, although the wheels are a distinctive addition.

“Someone will recognise this vehicle, and we would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist us with reuniting it with its rightful owner,” Det Lee said.

Anyone with information can contact Det Lee at the Wanaka Police station on (03) 443-7272 or alan.lee@police.govt.nz
