Postal agency announced

A new postal agency has been announced for Alexandra, at Paper Plus Alexandra.

But there is still no word on when the existing Alexandra Post Office will close, and when redundancies there will be confirmed.

NZ Post issued a statement yesterday saying an agreement had been reached with Paper Plus Alexandra to provide postal services. Customers will be able to post letters and parcels, buy postage, access over the counter banking services and pay their bills at Paper Plus Alexandra. The new service is expected to begin in early 2018.

The box lobby would remain in its current location, at the existing post office, so there would be no change to this service for customers, the statement said.

The statement said NZ Post would work alongside Kiwibank to keep ''our staff, customers and the local community informed as dates and changes are confirmed''.

It did not say when redundancies at the post office would be confirmed. A NZ Post spokesman said it was ''too early to comment on any further details''.

''We hope to be able to make further announcements in the new year ... after we've shared the information with staff, customers and the local community.''

Five staff work at the existing post office. When the closure of the post office was announced in September, a spokesman confirmed there would be some redundancies but did not say how many.

Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan said he was pleased a postal agency was being established in Alexandra, but his thoughts ''as always, remain with the staff who will be affected''.

It was regrettable staff would be made redundant, but good that postal services would be retained, Mr Cadogan said.

''I hope that over time the people of Alexandra will get used to the changes, the same way the people of Cromwell did.''

The Cromwell Post Office closed in 2008, and the postal agency there is in Paper Plus Cromwell.
