Regional research proposals on funding shortlist

A Central Otago space research centre and a Southland satellite project are still in the running for funding as a Regional Research Institute, as the first successful project is selected.

A Centre for Space Science Technology for Central Otago is on the shortlist which would allow the use of space-based measurements and satellite imagery to develop solutions tailored to regions and key sectors like resource management and regional planning.

Another shortlisted proposal was Southland's Earth+Vantage, which would conduct research using ground-based and satellite data to bolster productivity across New Zealand's primary industry.

Regional Research Institutes were announced in last year's Budget with the intent to encourage industry research and development and innovation throughout New Zealand's regions.

The New Zealand Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology (NZRIVO) which will be based in Marlborough was announced as the first Regional Research Institute by Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce.

“The NZRIVO. . . will undertake new research activity and collaborate with other domestic and international research institutions to support the growth and continuing success of New Zealand’s wine and viticulture industry,” Mr Joyce said.

The institute will operate as an independently governed and private organisation where the funding will initially be sourced from the government and the industry.

Applications for the second funding round for Regional Research Institutes will open in early November.
