Construction of the next of Central Otago's new network of trails is about to get under way.

A sod-turning ceremony will be held on the shores of Lake Dunstan, near Cromwell, next Friday to mark the beginning of the Lake Dunstan Cycle Trail.

Construction is scheduled to begin the week after that.

The 54km trail will begin at Smith's Way, near Pisa Moorings, and follow the Lake Dunstan shore to Cromwell and the Bannockburn Bridge. It will cross the bridge and follow the lake around the Bannockburn Inlet, then true right of Lake Dunstan to the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club, near the Clyde Dam.

The trails are part of a $26 million trail network that will link Cromwell to Alexandra, Wanaka and Queenstown.
