WW1 events discussion

The second of two community discussions in Central Otago about World War 1 commemorations will be held in Alexandra tonight.

On Tuesday, about 20 people attended the first meeting, which provided ideas about how the Central Stories Museum and Gallery could mark the occasion of the World War 1 centenary.

The aim of the meetings was to find out what people in the area wanted to see and know about during the period.

The Central Stories manager, Rachael Welfare, of Alexandra, said getting children involved in the commemorations and educating them was an emphasis of the planning. It was also intended to make the programme relevant to today's generation, Ms Welfare said.

''We have until 2018 to educate and tell stories, and want to make it interesting and comprehensive.''

The Central Stories commemoration period would be launched with an exhibition which explores the stories of Central Otago leading up to, during, and after World War 1, on August 8.

Today's meeting will be held in Alexandra at 6pm, in the Central Stories SBS Room.
