Conditions may influence angling

Recent rain and snow melt could put a dampener on the start of the brown trout fishing season today.

Most brown trout-dominated rivers in coastal and central Otago are open to recreational anglers from today, but the rainbow trout-dominated rivers of the Southern Lakes district are off-limits until November 1.

Fish and Game Otago officer Morgan Trotter said some rivers could be a "washout" for opening weekend, but some streams in North Otago were in better shape, as were some of the small dams in the Maniototo.

Anglers should check their regulation guide before going out, and make sure they had their licences with them, he said. Volunteer rangers would be out and about during the weekend talking to anglers.

Sales of licences had been slow due to the cold weather, but had picked up in the past few days.
