Doc campsite fees change

The Department of Conservation has confirmed a new national pricing system for paid campsites and Great Walk huts, and as a result changed the charging method at four campsites in the Otago region.

Commercial director David Wilks said the four campsites which previously cost $6 per site would now cost $6 per adult.

"It should have been [a] charge per adult so we have just brought them in line with the rest of the country.

"The per site charge was an historic thing, that's being changed because it was a bit of an anomaly just in the Otago region."

The campsites were Glencoe, Purakaunui Bay, Tawanui and Trotters Gorge.

The new system would "streamline" hut and campsite costs to lessen confusion for users.

"Before, you would go from one campsite to the other and you would have no idea what you were paying," Mr Wilks said.

Of the 19 campsites in the Otago region, six were "basic" sites free of charge, four were now $6 per adult sites, four remained the same price and five decreased.

The five sites that became cheaper were Kinloch, Moke Lake, Skippers, Sylvan and Twelve Mile Delta, which all decreased from $7 to $6.

The one Great Walk hut in the Otago region, the Routeburn Falls Hut, would increase $2.90 to $54 a night.

Otago was not the only region hit by fee increases. Mr Wilks said it was the same across the country.

Doc would advertise the changes, which would come into effect on July 1, when camping was not as prevalent.

"Prices change. That's happened before but what has happened now is that we have a system that is nationally aligned."
