Drivers warned to watch wintry roads in South

Road users are warned to watch out for Ice, fog and snow in parts of the South today and drive to the conditions.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council said overnight rain and clearing skies brought with it a risk of a sudden freeze and widespread ice.

Possible rain this morning could bring snow to the top of the Crown Range linking Queenstown and Wanaka and Lindis Pass (State Highway 8). Drivers should carry chains and watch for gritted areas.

The constant freeze-thaw and rain increases the danger of rockfall, the council said, and this had been reported on the Devils Staircase between Frankton and Kingston.

"Look out on that route in particular and expect the unexpected."
