Milford Rd reopens, snow showers for alpine passes

The Milford Road has reopened on Sunday afternoon after work to control avalanches in the area was carried out.

State Highway 94 (Te Anau to Milford Sound) was closed at 1.15pm from Hollyford, the Milford Road Alliance advised earlier in the day, but reopened at 3pm.

The road had been closed overnight due to the moderate risk of an avalanche.

Meanwhile, snow showers were forecast for alpine roads the Lewis Pass (State Highway 7) and Porters Pass (State Highway 73) from this afternoon.

On the Lewis Pass, less than 1cm of snow may settle on the road near the summit between 5pm and 9pm today.

A period of snow showers were likely to affect the higher parts of Porters Pass today. Between 2pm and 8pm, 1 to 2cm of snow may settle on the road above 800 metres.

A few showers were expected above 700 metres on the Crown Range Road linking Queenstown and Wanaka this morning, but little if any snow was expected to settle on the road.

Dansey’s Pass Road in Central Otago is restricted to 4wd vehicles due to snow.
